Powerpoint 2003 displays distorted video before playing a clip

When I try and run a presentation on powerpoint with a video clip inserted it displays a distorted video picture for a couple of seconds before it starts playing.

I've tried:

Updating office
Updating video drivers
Updating windows media player

Has anyone got any suggestions?

thanks. I've turned it down to the 3rd notch which works but it looses quality. This is the highest notch it will work on.

this disab;es all directdraw and direct 3d accelerations. So my problem must be something to do with that!
