Techniques for writing essays

Hi

Do you provide assistance in writing effective essays and improving analytical skills? I am at a loss for words when it comes to essay and analyzing case study exams, or it takes too long to think about what I need to say. I can't seem to elaborate on the subject any more than a line or two. I am studying business management and will have a mid-term exam coming up. I want to do well (A) but the essay and case study question fears me.

If this is not in your area of expertise, can you advise where I can see help?

Not my area, but I have taken enough exams in the past.

Two techniques may help.

1. Every essay has a start, middle and end. Plan the essay along these lines. Work out what the three key messages are that you want to convey. Then hang facts onto the start, middle and end that help to illustrate the point. also what little sub stories can you put into to the lecture.

2. Try mind mapping. It is often difficult to start in lists of items that flow down. Try working out from the centre of a page in all directions. Hang ideas or directions off each one. I have just type mind map into Google and have come up with this example http://www.peterussell.com/MindMaps/HowTo.html

I use software for this called Inspiration. I think that it is at www.inspiration.com (they have a 30 day free trial) but you could do it with a pen and paper.

I think before you even start writing your essay you need to brainstorm. What is your topic? When you think of your topic, what are the first things that come to mind? Get a piece of paper and immediately start to write these down. When you can't think of anymore than stop and look at what you have written. Then select the ones that you have written that are related most to your topic and help you get your point across. After you have done this you pretty much have chosen everything that you need to talk about in the body of your essay. In an essay I think you should have a introduction, three main good points for the body and a conclusion. If you have these basic things then you should come out with a good essay.

Before you start creating your essay it is important to decide which topic are you going to focus with. Try to think about first the purpose of essay that you're intended to write. Focus on subjects that interest you or familiar with. Topics from which you are particularly well-informed. Then after you come up for your topic, create an outline for your idea. Write down all facts or information that support your topic and you must also think for your targeted audiences. Hope this simple guidelines will help you in creating your essay papers.

What make a good essay is a good topic. Topic selection is one of the most difficult task in writing a high-quality essay. Choose a topic on which you have some knowledge so, that you can write on it easily.

Good English writing skills also play a major role in essay writing and it only comes from practice. Practice as much as you can.

This thread is informative. As I have read the replies, I have learned new things on how to right essays. Thanks a lot for these. By the way, I am newbie essay writer and I am hoping to improve my writing skills through reading more about strategies on how to write better essays.
