No Sex Please We’re Scottish … Workers
A new survey shows that 19% of Scots are being put off sex because they have to work long hours.
Amicus, Scotland’s skilled union, is publishing results from a health and safety survey that reveals all aspects of family life are being effected by working too hard. A third of all respondents said that they didn’t have enough time to spend with partners or children and up to 40% say they don’t have enough time to do work related training or any other kind of education.
Community work, socialising, personal fitness and hobbies all suffered under excessive working hours.
61% blame long working hours for failing to keep up with the housework.
The results are being unveiled at a conference Glasgow which will be attended by employees from many of Scotland’s largest employers including Allied Distiller, Diagio, Scotrail, Total, Bristows, Scottish Water, Glasgow Science Centre, BAE Systems Thales, Scottish Power, Local Authorities, the NHS and universities.
John Quigley, Amicus National Secretary, said:
"Forcing people to work excessive hours is the work equivalent to a low carb diet – immediate results but with potentially damaging effects on the health of your business."
"BA workers striking over long hours showed just how seriously the modern work force takes health and safety and the hours they are being asked to work".
"The Scottish Executive and the CBI are both convinced that family friendly policies will make the Scotland a more profitable and efficient place to work."
