Hyperlinks get broken after saving ppt. and reopening!

This is the STRANGEST thing I have ever encountered.
I am linking to source files in the same folder as my presentation, for instance, html page that is on the hard drive, (meaning it is not actually going through the internet) or whatever.
I hyperlink the files. Everything works in slideshow mode.
I save as a PPT.
Then re open and all the links point to the wrong files in the folder!?? It seems like they are being bumped up one. For example the first link points to what the second link should have been ect..the whole way through the presentation. The lat link is then blank or broken completely. i though the problem happened on PC, because when I do it on a mac it seems to work, but now on my mac, it seems like I have to 1. make the links, 2. save the ppt. 3. open the ppt. the links are all botched! so 4. if i re link everything and save it AGAIN, it seems to work. So basically if i do it twice it works, however, if someone else opens the ppt. and makes a change and re saves, the links get moved around again.
the folders and everything are all in the correct place, its not that the links break, they just point to the wrong files.
Has anyone ever had this happen??!! It is really frustrating and I can't think of any rational explaination for it.

thanks!!!
