PPT vs. PPS

Just joined the forum tonight. Would like to get proficient at PowerPoint. I used it about nine years ago to make some presentations while attending Heald College. Forgot everything I knew then. I currently have MS PowerPoint 2002 on my computer. Should I upgrade to a newer version to get started?
My second question as listed in the title. I have a couple of PPT presentations that someone has sent me. They appear to be master or working copies. How do I convert them to PPS presentations so they open up and view properly on a computer? Thanks for any assistance.

PPT 2002 is fine IMHO. It has pretty well all of the animation features of later versions though 2007 has much better graphic capabilties. earlier version lack many of the animations including all exit and emphasis ones.

To convert a .ppt to a .pps there are two main ways

1. Simply rename the file from something.ppt to something.pps You may need to uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" to do this. You can find this in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder options > View. Ignore the message of gloom and doom! This does not work in version 2007

2. Open the file in powerpoint and Save As. Scroll down in the "Save as Type" box till you find P{owerPoint show *.pps.
